Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans feels the Reds deserved to win their FA Cup replay against West Ham United, following their 2-1 loss at Upton Park last night.

The Merseyside giants, who played out a goalless draw in the original fourth round tie at Anfield last month, fell behind to Michail Antonio’s goal on the brink of half-time.

Philippe Coutinho scored from a cleverly taken free-kick just after the break to take the game into extra-time.

Liverpool, who fielded a young side, looked most likely to score in extra-time; but just when it looked like the match was heading towards penalties, Angelo Ogbonna scored a last-gasp winner to knock out Jurgen Klopp’s team.

And Evans, who insisted that he was “gutted” to see Liverpool lose, thinks the Reds were by far the better team at Upton Park.

“I’m really gutted”, he said on LFC TV, while discussing the match afterwards.

“They didn’t deserve that overall.

“They were the better team by far. Created more chances, again gave away a silly goal if you like.

“But overall it was a good performance from a team full of teenagers. They deserved to win it by miles.”

Liverpool have failed to win against West Ham in four attempts in the present campaign, with the Hammers recording a memorable double over the Reds in the Premier League.
