Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan has heaped praise on Kevin Stewart, following the defensive midfielder’s inspired performance in the 2-1 loss to West Ham in an FA Cup replay last night.

The 22-year-old, who joined the Reds from Tottenham Hotspur in 2014, was heavily used by Jurgen Klopp in the club’s FA Cup campaign.

He played the two entire games against Exeter City in the previous round of the competition before featuring against West Ham twice in the fourth round.

And Whelan, who feels Stewart has been a “revelation” for Liverpool this season, lauded the youngster’s ability to win back balls in midfield and distribute it forward.

“Kevin Stewart has been a revelation for me because he wasn’t on my radar”, he said on LFC TV while assessing the match.

“He does that job of winning the ball back and getting things going.

“For me he's been really, really good.”

Stewart, who is a product of Spurs’ youth system, has spent loan spells at Cheltenham Town, Burton Albion and Swindon Town during his time at Anfield.

He has thus far made four senior appearances for Liverpool, with all of those coming in the FA Cup this season.
