Legendary Celtic defender Tom Boyd believes it is absolutely ridiculous to demand a manager wins a treble every year.

The Bhoys currently have the chance to win a double with Ronny Deila’s side currently at the top of the Scottish Premiership, level on points with Aberdeen, albeit with a game in hand.

The Celtic Park outfit are also in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup, however, there have been calls from a section of fans and many pundits for the sacking of the 40-year-old.

Boyd spent 11 years with Celtic from 1992 to 2003, making over 300 appearances for the Bhoys.

During his time with the Glasgow side the 50-year-old lifted three Scottish league titles along with three Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

Boyd feels that Celtic’s problem this year has been the resurgence of Aberdeen, who have put together a consistent run and have been playing well.

The former defender recalled that only last month Deila was awarded the manager of the month after his side produced some swashbuckling performances in the league.

The 50-year-old feels that sacking Deila would send the wrong message to his successors that the Bhoys want to win the treble every year, which is next to impossible.

Boyd was quoted as saying by BBC Scotland: "A couple of games ago he got manager of the month for producing a team who scored a hell of a lot of goals in three games.

"We've got a great chance of winning another Double and can you imagine, if that was to be the case, sacking our manager? How would that go well for anybody coming in to take control of the football club, that your remit is to win a Treble every year? I think it's absolutely ridiculous.

"Aberdeen have done exceptionally well. They've got a great run of consistency, players who are playing well. That's been Celtic's problem this year."

Deila’s side host Ross County at Celtic Park on Saturday and will be hoping to remain at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
