Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan has explained that he was not surprised to see West Ham score a last-gasp winner in the 2-1 victory over the Reds in an FA Cup replay last night.

The Merseyside giants, who have had a very leaky defence in the present campaign, came into the match on the back of a 2-2 draw with Sunderland in the Premier League at the weekend.

In that game at Anfield, Liverpool squandered a two-goal lead to come out with just a solitary point, with the Black Cats scoring twice inside the last nine minutes.

It was a similar story at Upton Park too as it seemed the game was heading towards penalties; but West Ham scored a late goal through Angelo Ogbonna in extra-time to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup.

And Whelan, whose former team have the sixth-worst defensive record in the Premier League this season, insisted that West Ham nicking the game with a late winner did not come as a surprise to him.

“The manager said on Saturday that he wasn’t surprised Sunderland came back into the game because it’s happening”, he told LFC TV, while discussing Liverpool’s defence.

“And I wasn’t surprised when West Ham scored. Every time there’s a ball going in you think ‘oh now they’re going to score.’

“So when they do score it’s not really a major surprise because we can’t hold onto leads.”
