Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Jose Mourinho could be a potentially good appointment for Red Devils, but says Ryan Giggs would give them more stability.

The Portuguese has been linked with the Manchester United manager’s job for weeks, and despite Louis van Gaal’s irritation the din surrounding the ex-Chelsea manager's potential arrival at Old Trafford in the summer is only increasing.

Ferdinand is aware of all the rumours surrounding Mourinho and Manchester United and believes if the Red Devils want someone who has a record of winning trophies everywhere then the former Chelsea boss is the manager they should go for.

However, he also added that if Manchester United want someone who understands the club and will look to maintain their traditions, then they should appoint Giggs – but he feels the Welshman could be the riskier of the two moves.

Speaking to Indian broadcaster NDTV, the former Manchester United defender said: "Jose Mourinho's name is getting mentioned. If you want someone whose got a career track record in winning in the Premier League and various other countries, then he's that guy.

“But if you want someone who understands the philosophy, whose respectful of the philosophy, who identifies with the fans, knows the place inside out, whose going to be a bigger risk, then Ryan Giggs is that guy."

When asked whether Mourinho is good, bad or ugly for Manchester United, the former defender said: “Potentially good.”
