Former France international David Trezeguet believes Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud doesn’t have the same qualities as Karim Benzema, but admits that the national team still need the former Montpellier man.

The Arsenal striker has battled critics and popular opinion about his abilities to become a crucial player for both club and country in the last few seasons.

The forward has already scored 18 times for the Gunners in all competitions this season, and is expected to play a key role in France’s bid to win the European Championship this summer on home soil.

Trezeguet is pleased to see Giroud finally getting the recognition he deserves in France, but admits that he is not the same player as Benzema, who has been suspended by the national team because of a recent off-the-field controversy.

While the former Juventus star believes the Arsenal striker might not have the same quality as the Real Madrid man, he thinks the 29-year-old is still an important player for the Les Bleus.

Trezeguet told beIN Sport: “More and more we are talking good things about him and it is great for him and the French team because he scores.

“Of course he doesn’t have the same qualities as Karim Benzema, but he has other qualities.

“He also performs well for France, but like I said he is not the same player as Benzema; but we need him.”

Giroud has earned 41 international caps for France and has ten goals to his name.
