Rangers manager Mark Warburton thinks his side were guilty of being too gung-ho, something which made the Englishman take the decision to tighten things up at the back.

The Gers went through a sticky patch in November and December, with defeats to Hibernian and Falkirk, and draws with Livingston and Morton. Their form improved heading into the new year, but in recent games goals have been hard to come by.

Indeed, Rangers have netted just four goals in their last four games and Warburton admits he has looked to make the side tighter at the back.

"We had some work. We spoke about, analysis-wise, where did teams think we were vulnerable?" Warburton explained at a press conference.

"We had a spell where we dropped a couple of points, where we were maybe too gung-ho in terms of teams getting bodies behind the ball, eight nine or ten behind the ball, and we pushed on the extra man and lost our shape", the Englishman explained.

"A lot of the work we did as a group of players and staff outside was to tighten it up and I think, touch wood, it’s so far so good.

"There’s still a lot of work to be done, but defensively I think we’ve looked solid and compact in the last couple of games."

Warburton's side drew 0-0 at home against Premiership outfit Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup last weekend and the boss feels that his side's defensive shape helped restrict opportunities for Killie.

"We were very good against Kilmarnock last weekend, we moved well, we squeezed play well, we compacted space very well", he added.

Rangers are in Scottish Championship action this weekend when they face a trip away to take on struggling Alloa Athletic, a game in which they will back themselves to rack up the goals.
