Leeds United legend Eddie Gray has slammed Derby County owner Mel Morris for the "rubbish" reasons he gave for sacking manager Paul Clement.

Earlier this week the Rams sacked the 43-year-old after just eight months in charge of the Championship club, on the back of a seven-game winless streak which saw them drop down to fifth in the league table.

While their form has dipped, Derby are still in with a great chance of earning promotion to the Premier League and Gray indicated that he is baffled by the reasons Morris gave for sacking Clement.

The Derby supremo said that Clement was sacked because of the style of football the team were playing under his tutelage, and promotion this season was not the primary target for the club.

The Leeds legend slammed the Derby owner for sacking Clement, calling him stupid for saying that promotion was not the target for the club this term.

Gray said on LUTV, previewing Leeds' clash against Middlesbrough on Monday: “You are in the top six, you still have a great chance of getting promotion, a good chance of automatic promotion if you look at the table and he gets the sack.

“I think there must have been a falling out down the line somewhere there. I couldn’t understand the owner’s explanation. To me he is talking rubbish.

“He is stupid; [He is saying that] the manager was obsessed about getting promotion and that was not the agenda here. If you are saying that as the owner of Derby County, then I don’t think the fans are going to like that.”

The Rams will host MK Dons in a home Championship fixture later today, their first without Clement in charge.
