Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino may not be popular with a section of the club's fans, but he is popular with a former Whites manager who has never worked under him.

Indeed, new Rotherham United boss Neil Warnock, who managed Leeds from 2012 until 2013, admits he would like to work under the Italian, feeling that Cellino is someone who gives managers a chance by backing them in the transfer market.

Warnock feels that during his time at Elland Road he was not backed, something he is convinced meant he could not lead the club up to the Premier League.

And despite Cellino regularly working his way through head coaches since he took control of the Yorkshire giants, Warnock raised eyebrows by revealing he would love to work with the controversial Whites owner.

"I am convinced if I had got the money I was promised when [Robert] Snodgrass was sold that I could have got Leeds up", he was quoted as saying by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"I am convinced of that. We were not too far short.

"We beat Tottenham and Everton, we had a decent team. But the investment wasn’t there. I would have actually liked to work with this Italian guy there now."

Pressed on whether he would have really liked to work under Cellino at Leeds, Warnock shot back: "I bloody would, aye. That wouldn’t have bothered me. I think Leeds is a great club."

Warnock has landed at Rotherham to replace another former Leeds boss in the shape of Neil Redfearn.

The 67-year-old's first game as Millers boss ended in a 0-0 home draw with Birmingham City on Saturday.
