Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer says he cannot wait to come up against Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero this afternoon.

Wimmer has received his chance in the heart of the Spurs defence after Jan Vertonghen suffered an injury. The Austria international's performances have been lauded by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, but he will receive a stern examination when he comes face to face with the prolific Aguero.

But Wimmer, who joined Spurs from Bundesliga club 1.FC Koln last summer, is relishing the chance to play against the Argentine and keep him quiet at the Etihad Stadium.

"I’m really looking forward to playing against such a strong player as Sergio Aguero and the other forwards that Manchester City have", he told his club's site.

"We all know that Aguero is one of the best forwards in the world and it’s not going to be easy to defend against him for the whole 90 minutes, but we will work together at the back and try everything to defend against him as well as possible", the Austrian continued.

"It’s not going to be easy for him either – of course he has a lot of quality, we all know that, but hopefully we will have a good performance from everyone at the back."

Spurs, who currently sit second in the Premier League standings, ahead of fierce rivals Arsenal on goal difference, head to the Etihad Stadium as genuine title contenders.

And Pochettino's men will no doubt be full of confidence after winning the previous meeting between the two teams 4-1 at White Hart Lane earlier this season.
