Leeds United legend Eddie Gray feels Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a potentially promotion winning move by snapping up Gary Hooper.

The Owls snapped Hooper up on loan from Norwich City in late October and he impressed. The striker, although needing seven games to score his first goal for the club, netted on a regular basis and convinced Sheffield Wednesday to sign him on a permanent basis in the middle of January.

Now a full Sheffield Wednesday player, Hooper has brought his weight of goals to bear on the promotion race and is currently on a run of eight goals in seven games, helping the Owls move into fifth spot in the Championship in the process.

For Gray, who knows Leeds also need a prolific hitman, signing Hooper was a smart move on the part of the Owls.

Indeed, he feels there is no better example of a player brought in to power a promotion push.

"We talk about teams getting players in who can get them promotion and I don't think there's a better example than the boy Hooper at Sheffield Wednesday", Gray said on LUTV.

"How many goals has he scored? He scores doubles."

Hooper was on target on Saturday as he helped the Owls ease to a comfortable 4-0 home win over Brentford, further reinforcing his side's growing promotion credentials.
