Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott has apologised for his side’s dire performance against Liverpool, and added that a picture of a car he tweeted following the game was accidental.

The Villans produced their worst performance of the season at home on Sunday, when they shipped six goals against a Liverpool side who have been struggling to find the back of the net this season.

They remained rooted to the bottom of the league table, and manager Remi Garde said after the game that he felt humiliated after such a chastening experience at Villa Park at the hands of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Lescott apologised to the supporters for the performance and while he admits Liverpool were the superior team, he believes the Villans had no excuse for lacking in commitment and fight, especially in front of their home fans at Villa Park.

He also added that the picture of the car he tweeted after the game was an accidental mistake, indicating that he was not meaning to hurt the Villa fans even further, after it caused uproar amongst the club faithful on social media.

A statement from the Villa defender read: “I’m not one for tweeting after games whether it’s a good, bad or indifferent result but I would like to apologise for the performance today, personally and collectively.

“Liverpool are and were better than us today but that doesn’t excuse mine and the team’s lack of commitment for the 90 minutes. Again apologies to all fans.

“I would like to add that the tweet sent out from my account involving a picture of a car was totally accidental. It happened whilst I was driving and my phone was in my pocket.”

Villa are currently on 16 points from 26 games, and are odds on favourites to suffer relegation from the Premier League this season.
