Liverpool midfielder James Milner admits he feels sorry for former club Aston Villa after the Reds thrashed Remi Garde's men 6-0 at Villa Park today.

The 30-year-old turned out for Villa on loan in the 2005/06 season before then linking up with the club on a permanent basis from 2008 until 2010.

However, he did not hold back today when he scored in Liverpool's 6-0 rout of the Premier League's bottom club, who now appear destined for life in the Championship next term.

Milner is sorry to see the state Aston Villa are in as he considers them to be a big club, but holds out a small amount of hope when it comes to avoiding relegation.

"It's disappointing to see them in this position", Milner told LFC TV.

"It's obviously a big club and a club where I had some good years.

"I've still got friends here, so disappointed to see them in that position.

"They need to bounce back and put a strong run together.

"There is always one team that does. Look at Leicester."

Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring at Villa Park in the 16th minute before Milner doubled Liverpool's advantage in the 25th minute.

The Reds then grabbed another four quick goals in the second half as Emre Can (58th minute), Divock Origi (63rd minute), Nathaniel Clyne (65th minute) and Kolo Toure (71st minute) completed the rout.
