Rangers assistant manager David Weir believes Kenny Miller’s wonder strike against Queen of the South on Sunday was reminiscent of Nacho Novo’s screamer in the final of 2009 Scottish Cup, which helped the Gers beat Falkirk 1-0.

Miller came on as a second half substitute for striker Nicky Clark in the 61st minute and three minutes later the 36-year-old unleashed a venomous right footed volley, which left Doonhammers goalkeeper Jim Atkinson rooted to the spot as it sailed into the top right corner.

The goal had an uncanny resemblance to the 2009 Scottish Cup winning goal scored by Novo.

The Spanish striker came on at half-time as a substitute for striker Kris Boyd and with his first touch of the game struck a swerving, dipping shot, which made its way past Falkirk goalkeeper Dani Mallo.

Weir led the side to the Scottish Cup triumph in 2009 and Miller was also on the pitch when Novo scored the winner.

Weir recalled that both games were level and needed a bit of magic to help the Gers record victories.

Speaking in an interview with Rangers TV, Weir said: “Yes, they are very similar in respect that the type of goals and also the situation within the games.

"They were both tied games and we needed a bit of magic to try and get us in front.

"And yes, the timings were slightly different, but the goals were very similar.”

Weir’s side currently sit at the top of the Scottish Championship and are eight points ahead of second placed Hibernian.
