West Ham midfielder Alex Song has revealed that he had the opportunity to join Marseille in the summer, but he decided to return to England because of his familiarity with the Premier League.

Song is on his second loan spell from Barcelona at West Ham this season, but injuries and form have not allowed him to be as influential as he was in the last campaign, when he was one of the constant fixtures of former Hammers manager Sam Allardyce’s team.

Slaven Bilic has more options at his disposal at Upton Park, and therefore, the former Arsenal man has turned into a bit part player, but it could have been different had he made a different decision in the summer.

West Ham were always keen to see Song return last summer, but the midfielder revealed that he declined an offer to join Marseille because of his familiarity with English football.

Speaking to beIN Sport, the midfielder said: “Last year, the president [Vincent Labrune] wanted me at Marseille.

“But I did not want to return to France; I left around 16-and-a-half years back, and it would have been difficult for me as I am used to the English league.”

However, the former Arsenal man added that he does one day want to return to and finish his career at Bastia, his first club.

He said: “But I would like to finish at Bastia in a few years time.”
