James Tavernier has explained that it was an “unbelievable feeling” to score the goal which helped Rangers to win the Scottish Championship title last night.

The right-back’s strike after the break at Ibrox enabled Rangers to edge out Dumbarton 1-0 and earn promotion back to the Scottish Premiership.

Tavernier has been in fine form since joining Rangers from Wigan Athletic on a three-year deal during the summer transfer window and has been dubbed the "Blue Cafu" by Gers fans.

The 25-year-old has scored 12 goals and provided 19 assists in 42 appearances in all competitions, in addition to providing solidity to the Gers’ defence.

And the defender, who insisted that the scoreline is not a true reflection of the game, feels Rangers should have defeated Dumbarton by a far bigger margin.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling”, he told Rangers TV.

“We pressed a lot today and tried to create chances, but they defended really well and the keeper pulled off some great saves, so I don’t think the scoreline tells the story of the game.

“They were well organised, but I am buzzing to get the only goal of the game. It was one of those where I’ve followed in and [Jason Holt] Holty found me.

“It was a gamble to make the run, but I was delighted to get into the right place at the right time.”

Rangers will look to wrap up their second trophy of the season when they take on Peterhead in the Challenge Cup final at Hampden on Sunday.

Mark Warburton’s team will then face Celtic in a Scottish Cup semi-final a week later.
