Leeds United boss Steve Evans believes Burnley midfielder Joey Barton deserves to win the Championship’s Player of the Year accolade.

The veteran English midfielder joined Burnley from Queens Park Rangers last summer, and has been a lynchpin in Sean Dyche’s team, as they look to get back into the Premier League.

With 32 Championship appearances this season, Barton’s form in the middle of the park has been crucial to Burnley’s bid for promotion and the Leeds manager feels it will be travesty if the midfielder is not nominated for Player of the Year.

Evans lavished praise on the 33-year-old ahead of Leeds’ visit to Turf Moor this Saturday for a Championship fixture.

Speaking ahead of the game, the Leeds boss told LUTV: “How good has Joey Barton’s season been?

“I think if he is not Player of the Year in the Championship, some people should be looking at the voting papers and say if there is integrity behind our vote because he should be winning it by a distance.”

Barton has been a veteran of club football in England, playing for teams such as Manchester City and Newcastle United.

He also has vast experience of playing in the Premier League and has clocked up more than 250 appearances in the English top tier.
