Leeds United boss Steve Evans has insisted that he is not taking part in discussions around Mirco Antenucci’s contract, but admits that he wants the Italian at the club next season.

The Italian came close to leaving Leeds during the January transfer window when it was widely speculated that he could be on his back to Italy, but the striker stayed put and has been a major player for the club since then.

He is the joint top scorer for the club this season with nine goals, and his goalscoring came in handy last month during Leeds three-game winning run, where he smashed in four goals.

However, Antenucci’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and there is no clarity whether the club are going to offer him a new deal or whether he wants to move back to Italy.

Evans wants the striker to continue at Elland Road, but admits that he is not taking part in contract discussions with any player at the club.

On the striker’s future at the club, the Scot said: “We always look at Mirco Antenucci as a goalscorer and we look at him as someone who can play a big part, but contracts are not my department.”
