Liverpool striker Divock Origi may miss the European Championship in the summer if he needs to undergo surgery on his damaged ankle ligaments, according to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

The in-form Belgium international picked up the injury in the 4-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday after Ramiro Funes Mori levelled him with a horrifying tackle.

Funes Mori, who was shown a straight red for the clumsy challenge, later apologised to Origi for the incident.

Origi had to leave the field on a stretcher and initial tests suggested that the striker will be sidelined for four to six weeks.

But in a recent development, it is believed that the 21-year-old may have to go under the knife to rectify the problem.

The decision whether Origi will require surgery will be taken next week, with the youngster’s participation in the European Championship now seriously in doubt.

Origi has thus far scored 10 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.
