Former Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas feels the Magpies have claimed a "massive" two points by securing draws against Manchester City and Liverpool.

Many expected Newcastle to lose both fixtures, with both the Citizens and the Reds in good form. However, Rafael Benitez guided his team to draws in both games, the latest a 2-2 draw away at Anfield against Liverpool today, to move Newcastle to 30 points from 35 matches.

The Magpies still sit second bottom in the Premier League table and in trouble, but Jenas, who played for the club from 2002 until 2005, thinks they showed real spirit to earn two points against two big teams.

Speaking on the BBC's Final Score programme, Jenas said: "The minute Newcastle got themselves back into the game they showed an unbelievable amount of spirit and determination – and a lot of quality at times.

"That's two massive points, Man City at home and Liverpool away", the 33-year-old added.
