Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that the club are in negotiations to sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

Hummels’ contract with Dortmund expires at the end of next season, and there is speculation that defender could be leaving the club. He has been linked with a trio of English clubs in the shape of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.

However, the defender’s father raised the spectre of Bayern Munich as a possibility last week, and said that the German champions will enter the discussions if Hummels leaves the Westfalenstadion.

In recent hours Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke dropped more hints that the Germany international could be heading to Bayern Munich, and now the Bavarians have confirmed that a deal could be on this summer.

While still at the negotiating stage, club CEO Rummenigge confirmed that there has been contact between Bayern Munich and Hummels. However, he decided not to give away too much about the potential move.

The Bayern Munich CEO was quoted as saying by German broadcaster Sport1: “Basically, I can confirm what Mr. Watzke said, that Mats is dealing with Bayern.

“However, it is a three-part business, so I ask that you understand – I have to go and I cannot elaborate now.”

A product of the Bayern Munich academy, Hummels joined Borussia Dortmund from the Bavarians in 2008, initially on loan, and has made 305 appearances for the club.
