Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke admits it would not be a huge shock for the club if Mats Hummels decides to join Bayern Munich in the summer.

Hummels’ future at the Westfalenstadion is up for discussion as his contract with the club expires at the end of next season, and the defender is considering whether he wants to leave Dortmund or sign a new long-term deal.

A trio of English clubs in the shape of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked with Hummels and sides are on red alert over whether he decides to leave the Westfalenstadion at the end of the season.

However, Hummels’ father recently raised the spectre of Bayern Munich, and hinted that the German champions will come into the discussions if his son eventually decides to leave Dortmund.

And Watzke admits that it would not come as a huge surprise for Dortmund if Hummels decides to go back to his former club this summer.

When asked about Hummels potentially joining the Bavarians, the Dortmund CEO told Sky Deutschland: “I think that if it is towards Bayern Munich he goes [it would be understandable].

“There are personal memories and he might feel that he is not yet finished with the club. His father, mother and his brother are from Munich; his wife is also from Munich, so there are a lot of components.

“When you are standing at the crossroads of life, you need to take a decision whether you want to continue on the hard path or take the slightly easier route.”

A product of the Bayern Munich academy, Hummels joined Dortmund initially on loan in 2008, before the move was made permanent in the summer of 2009.
