A decision on whether Liverpool striker Divock Origi needs to undergo an operation on his damaged ankle ligaments will be taken today by doctors, according to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

The 21-year-old picked up the injury in last week’s Merseyside derby under a heavy tackle from Ramiro Funes Mori, with the Everton player being sent off for it.

Origi had to leave the field on a stretcher and initial tests suggested that the striker will be out of action for four to six weeks, meaning his season was over.

The forward was in line to represent Belgium in the European Championship in France in the summer, but he will likely miss the continental competition if he has to go under the knife.

Origi has been in fine form for Liverpool in the present campaign, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists in 32 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside giants.
