Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has revealed he is looking for the current crop to match Howard Wilkinson's Whites team when it comes to performing at Elland Road.

When Evans took over at Elland Road in October he inherited a team with an appalling home record and one which had not won at home for over seven months.

The Scot eventually got the monkey off Leeds' back, but while he has gradually improved the club's home form, the Whites have still only won as many games as they have lost at Elland Road and Evans accepts there is room for improvement.

And Evans is keen to see Leeds match the aggressive home performances of Wilkinson's sides; Wilkinson bossed Leeds from 1988 until 1996 and led the club to the top flight title in 1992, a campaign in which the Whites did not lose a home league game.

"You're never going to take away the fact that players and staff, coming to Elland Road as the opposition, and I've been there, want to win that away fixture more than any other, more than their local derbies; I've been there, when I was manager of Rotherham United did I want to beat Sheffield Wednesday more than coming to Leeds and winning? Truth be known I wanted to win at Elland Road more", Evans told LUTV, when asked how Leeds continue to improve their home form.

"You are never going to take that away. I've always said, they are heavy shirts, they are shirts that have been worn by iconic legends in English football, not just Leeds United history.

"So you're always going to have that extra difficulty, but if you sign the right players and you work on their mentality, and you get your performances right, then winning, whether home or away, takes care of itself.

"But when I joined the club they hadn't won at home in eight months, I sorted that out. I'm still not overly happy with what we delivered at home on certain occasions because we should really be in peoples' faces here, like, look at Howard Wilkinson's team, opposition players couldn't get their heads up, there was a tackle coming in.

"So we need to do that as well as being able to play", the Scot added.

Evans will hope to make Elland Road a fortress next season if he is still in his position at Leeds, with question marks still swirling over his future.
