Former Celtic midfielder Pat McGinlay feels Hibernian manager Alan Stubbs is an ideal candidate to take charge of the Hoops next season, having handled himself well in mind games with Rangers boss Mark Warburton in the current campaign.

Last week the Scottish champions announced that present boss Ronny Deila will step down from his post after the end of the present campaign.

Despite Celtic being on the verge of winning the Scottish Premiership, the Norwegian has struggled to make his mark at Paradise this season as the club have fared poorly in cup competitions on both European and domestic fronts.

On the other hand, Hibernian are enjoying a successful campaign under the guidance of Stubbs; Hibs, who are chasing promotion to the Scottish Premiership, have also managed to reach the final of the Scottish Cup, where they will face Rangers.

And McGinlay backed former Celtic player Stubbs to succeed Deila as the Scottish giants’ next manager, being particularly impressed with how he has handled Gers boss Warburton.

“I think he must be seen as a candidate for that job”, McGinlay was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

“I don’t see many others looking good for it. Stubbsy is a great character, a good coach and he’s bringing a lot of young boys through at Hibs as well.

“If he can win the Scottish Cup and also get them promotion then that would be massive endorsement of his qualities. He talks well, too.

“He has that bit of arrogance about him that you need as a manager. I’ve noticed this season that he and Mark Warburton had a bit of ongoing banter, maybe mind games or whatever, and I liked that.

“And I think Stubbs has handled himself well on that front. The fact he’s a former Celtic player should help his case, too.

“When you’ve been there and know the club that gives you a wee step up. If Stubbsy can bring Hibs into the Premiership and also win the cup then that would speak for itself.”

Celtic will secure the Scottish Premiership title if they manage to beat Heart of Midlothian on Saturday.
