Former Leeds United striker Andy Ritchie believes Steve Evans knows what will happen to him if he does not start next season well with the Whites.

Even though Leeds could finish in the top ten and hit their highest points tally in five seasons under Evans, the Scot’s future at the club is still in doubt.

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino is yet to offer Evans a new deal which would keep him at Elland Road beyond this season.

Evans has also been linked with taking charge of other clubs in the summer, such as Nottingham Forest and Celtic, but the 53-year-old has time and again reiterated his desire to stay at Leeds.

However, Ritchie feels Evans will have very little room for error at the beginning of next season if Cellino indeed hands him a contract extension in the summer.

“The rumoured talk of other rival clubs being linked with him will represent a nice ‘comfort blanket’ for Steve”, he wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“But it is clearly obvious that he really wants to stay at Leeds United and take the job on and take it further. He will fancy his chances if he is allowed another go at it next season.

“But the problem also for Steve is he will know what will happen if he doesn’t get it right at Leeds at the beginning of next season and the opportunity will fade away.”

Leeds, who are currently 12th in the Championship with 58 points from 44 outings, are next up against Charlton Athletic later in the day.
