Leeds United boss Steve Evans accepts his side defended poorly in their 2-1 home defeat to Charlton Athletic today.

The Whites struggled to get going and raise their tempo from the off, despite Elland Road seeing over 25,000 fans packed in and Charlton always carried a threat.

A warning came when Johann Berg Gudmundsson hit the post from 25 yards out, before the same player then got on the end of a Morgan Fox cross to make it 1-0 to the visitors six minutes before half time.

It took only four minutes after the start of the second half for the Addicks to grab their second, with Ademola Lookman beating Marco Silvestri in the Leeds' goal.

Leeds then showed signs of fight and Chris Wood hit the post with a header, before Sol Bamba was left unmarked and headed the Whites back into the game in the 71st minute.

Evans' men could not score again though and suffered defeat, meaning that bar an unlikely goal difference swing, they will not be able to overtake Preston and finish in the top eleven.

"We played really well in the opening 25 minutes but we missed good chances and I think that set the scene", Evans told BBC Radio Leeds, reflecting on the game.

"We defended so poorly for the second goal but for the last 25 minutes, it was one of those days.

"I said to the players, it's not the 25 minutes where we were totally dominant, you can't switch off defensively and still win", he added.
