Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow says that the Magpies have never felt they would go down after they gave themselves further hope of survival today with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

It was a nervous opening 45 minutes at St. James' Park, with Crystal Palace enjoying the better of the game and having chances to take the lead, which they did not take.

And Newcastle made Palace pay in the second half when Andros Townsend put the home side in front.

The goal, which came in the 58th minute, was a superb free-kick from around 20 yards out from the former Tottenham Hotspur man.

As the clock ticked down it appeared Newcastle were set for a vital three points, but Palace won a penalty in the 69th minute when Moussa Sissoko handled the ball in the box.

But Yohan Cabaye, a former Newcastle player, saw his lacklustre spot-kick saved by Darlow, allowing the Magpies to close out the match and take all three points.

The Magpies are now outside the drop zone, one point ahead of Sunderland, and Darlow says they have never thought they would be relegated.

"We were a bit flat in the first half but Andros’ goal got everyone up. The penalty save was a good moment for me. We have to keep going and make sure we avoid relegation", Darlow was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I just kept plugging away, you never know in football when your chance will come and you have to be ready to play. Tim Krul and Rob Elliot did an excellent job and now it is my turn to carry on the baton until the end of the season.

"We have never thought we would go down, it is not in our minds, we have stuck at it all season and we have been on a bit of a run for the last four games and hopefully we can carry that on."
