Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan thinks Jordan Botaka did not do enough to convince after being handed a start for the Whites against Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

Botaka was brought off the bench last weekend at Hull City and impressed with his showing at the KC Stadium, providing the assist to help Leeds grab a 2-2 draw.

Whites head coach Steve Evans rewarded Botaka by giving him the full 90 minutes at Elland Road against Charlton, but Whelan thinks the winger did not do enough and turned in an average performance.

Assessing the game on BBC Radio Leeds after the match, Whelan said: "I didn't think Botaka took his chance today and I thought it was an average performance.

"He had the full game to do that but there just wasn't enough end product for me today from Botaka", he added.

Botaka has been on the fringes at Leeds for the majority of Evans' reign at the club, being forced to make do with playing for the club's Under-21 side.

There has been speculation that the DR Congo international may be offloaded in the summer, however Evans has lauded his work ethic in recent weeks as he looks to force his way into the side.

The winger will want another start next weekend when Leeds play their final game of the season away at Preston North End.
