Leeds United head coach Steve Evans insists he will be honest over the recruitment in the summer and will not promise a promotion challenge if the right players have not been signed.

Evans does not yet know whether he will be in charge at Elland Road next season as his deal expires in the summer and president Massimo Cellino has not offered the Scot a new contract.

Cellino has promised to give a partial refund to season ticket holders next season if Leeds do not finish in the playoff places and the pressure will be on whoever is in the dugout at Elland Road.

Evans is convinced he can lead a promotion challenge, but only if the summer recruitment is right.

And he insists that if he does not believe the club's summer transfer activity has been good enough then he will not promise to have the Whites challenging for the Premier League.

"We can't always make up for a lack of real quality with effort and determination, but there's lads in that dressing room who have got top level quality and some of them will go on and grace the Premier League", Evans said on BBC Radio Leeds following his side's 2-1 loss to Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

"But we need to make sure we add to the group constructively, that we add to it wisely and we put a team on the pitch that's befitting of the supporters.

"The supporters will always be the lifeblood of this football club", the Scot continued.

"The city is begging for a good Leeds United team.

"If I get the opportunity to manage it, and I'll know by the recruitment.

"If I am saying at the start of the season we have a real challenge and a real opportunity to make that challenge at the top end of the league then I will believe it.

"I am not going to come out and say it if I do not believe the recruitment has been right", Evans added.

Leeds finish their season next weekend by taking on Preston North End at Deepdale.
