Steve Claridge says he is not at all surprised Mauricio Pochettino chose to sign a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur as he thinks the White Hart Lane outfit are a massive club poised to move to the next level.

Pochettino, who had been linked with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, has agreed to extend his contract with Spurs until the summer of 2021.

Claridge is not surprised the Argentine wants to remain with Spurs as he feels the north London side are a huge club, a fact which is not widely appreciated.

The former striker also feels the level of support Spurs have, combined with the fact they are going to move into a new stadium, means the club are placed to move up to the next level in the game and compete with the world's richest clubs.

"If you go down to Spurs and you have a look at the billboards it will show you what's happening with the new ground", Claridge said on BBC Radio 5 live on Friday night.

"So you can well understand why he [Pochettino] thinks that Spurs are a club with a big, big future – and they are.

"Unless you really know your football then I don't think people realise quite how big Spurs are.

"If you go to any away game that Spurs are involved in, and that's usually a telling point as to what size the football club is, it's always packed. There is always a huge, huge following", Claridge continued.

"They sell out every week. They are like Arsenal, they will have 60,000 people every week.

"I think they will play in the Champions League at Wembley. They sell out on every occasion for their Champions League games. There is the potential, easily, to get 60,000 every week.

"So they will go to another level", he added.

Spurs are next in action on Monday evening when they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a game they must win to keep their Premier League title hopes alive.
