Mark Warburton has insisted that Rangers will compete for the Scottish Premiership title next season as finishing second behind their arch-rivals Celtic is like coming last from the Gers' point of view.

The Ibrox outfit won the Scottish Championship title last month and will hence be in the top flight next season for the first time since they had to start in the fourth tier following their liquidation in 2012.

Rangers have been a consistent outfit in the present campaign, having also won the Challenge Cup in addition to reaching the final of the Scottish Cup by beating Celtic on penalties on 17th April.

Although it has been claimed in some corners that next season may come too soon for Rangers to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title, Warburton explained that the supporters will not be pleased if they finish behind Celtic.

“We have to. Second is last. From a Rangers perspective, second is last. You have to make sure you understand that”, he told BT Sport.

“If you do, you are halfway there to recognising what they expect as a group of supporters and as a club.”

Rangers, who have failed to win any of their four league games since their triumph in the Old Firm derby in April, will face Hibernian in the Scottish Cup final on 21st May.
