Outgoing Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has explained that he endured mixed emotions after his side’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg last night.

The win at the Allianz Arena was not enough for Bayern Munich to progress to the final as Atletico Madrid’s away goal was the deciding factor in the semi-final tie which ended 2-2 on aggregate.

The Bavarians, who lost the first leg 1-0 in Spain last week, broke the deadlock in the 31st minute through Xabi Alonso before Thomas Muller failed to convert a penalty three minutes later.

Antoine Griezmann then equalised for the visitors after the break, with Robert Lewandowski once again giving Bayern Munich the lead in the 74th minute.

The German champions however failed to score the decisive goal as Atletico Madrid also missed a chance to draw level when Fernando Torres’ penalty was saved in the 84th minute.

And Guardiola stated that although he was proud and happy with his charges’ efforts against Atletico Madrid, he felt sad for the players, who gave everything to reach the Champions League final.

“Congratulations to Atletico. It was a good game, I'm sure everyone all over Europe will have enjoyed it”, Guardiola, who will take charge of Manchester City next season, told UEFA’s official site.

“We did everything we could, and I'm proud of my players. I'm sad for them, but I'm happy with how we played today and I'm proud of my team. This club has a bright future.

“We're not German champions yet – we still need a point. Hopefully we can get that on Saturday.

“Today everyone – me, the players and the fans – is sad but my players can still be proud of what they've done this season.”
