Leeds United head coach Steve Evans feels a lack of consistency and a failure to beat the bottom teams has turned out to be the club’s downfall this season.

Evans took charge of the club in October when the side looked in real danger of getting sucked into the relegation quagmire, but despite a few poor spells, the Scot has managed to steer the Whites into mid-table security, with just one game left in the season.

Leeds have been thrilling in spells this term, but have also been inconsistent for large parts, which has stopped the club from ever threatening to break into the Championship playoff spots in the 2015/16 campaign.

Evans is confident that had he been charge of the club from the start of the season, Leeds would have finished higher but the Scot admits that even he has failed to find a solution for their inconsistent displays.

While he feels more quality players should play an important part going forward, the Leeds boss admits that some of the results against the teams in the Championship’s basement have been unacceptable.

The Leeds boss told LUTV: “I think there is no dispute that if the season had started with me and Paul Raynor coming into the building, we would be much higher up the table than we are going to finish.

“It’s always buts and maybes; in our time as well we lacked that consistency factor. Consistency comes with having good enough players to deal with top and bottom of the league.

“To beat two of the bottom nine here at Elland Road is not acceptable, in any shape or form and in any league, if you have to challenge at the top end.

“We have had no issues with the top of the table sides, particularly the form and often the results have been commendable.

“If we finish 11th or 12th it’s probably where we are. It’s a little bit of progress from last year but not enough.”
