Tottenham Hotspur defender-cum-midfielder Eric Dier has stressed the need for a strong finish at home against Southampton so that Spurs can end their campaign at White Hart Lane on a high.

Mauricio Pochettino's team saw their slim chances of winning their first Premier League title being snatched away by rivals Chelsea, who held them to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

However, the season is far from over for the Lilywhites, who are now looking to secure second spot, their best finish since 1962/63.

Next up for Tottenham will be an in-form Southampton side, who recorded a 4-2 win against Manchester City last weekend. In spite of the apparent tough nature of the opposition, Dier feels that his team will go into the match with confidence.

Spurs are keen, Dier says, to make sure the fans head away from White Hart Lane happy. Tottenham finish their season at Newcastle the following weekend.

“Southampton are a very good team in good form and they proved that last week against Manchester City", Dier told his club's official website.

"It will be a tough match but we’re confident and we want to give the fans something to cheer about in the last home match of the season.

“We want to go out on a high.

"That would be the ideal finish at home for us and for the fans.”
