Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has sought to compare Jurgen Klopp to Jose Mourinho by saying that top managers always want to win something in their first season at a new club to stamp their authority.

Klopp, who took charge of Liverpool in October, guided the club to the Europa League final by beating Villarreal 3-0 in a semi-final second leg at Anfield last night and winning the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

The German also managed to take the Reds to the League Cup final, where they lost to Manchester City on penalties earlier in the year.

Klopp will have his second chance to win a trophy in his debut season at Anfield when Liverpool take on Sevilla in the Europa League final at St. Jakob-Park in Basel on 18th May.

And McAteer insists that it is a common trend amongst successful managers to win a trophy early on, with the 44-year-old going on to explain how Mourinho made his mark at Chelsea by winning the League Cup in his debut season in England.
