Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan is certain Jurgen Klopp does not want the Reds to become a cup team such as Tottenham Hotspur.

The Merseyside giants, who have been inconsistent in the Premier League this season, beat Villarreal 3-0 in a Europa League semi-final second leg clash at Anfield last night, thereby winning the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

Liverpool also managed to reach the final of the League Cup, where they lost to Manchester City on penalties earlier in the year.

Similarly, Tottenham too always did well in cup tournaments but faltered in the league; although Spurs did put up a strong title charge in the present campaign which ended with a 2-2 draw to Chelsea on Monday.

But Whelan feels Klopp will not be satisfied with only good cup runs as he feels Liverpool will challenge for the Premier League title under the German’s tutelage.

“We always talk about the manager after the big games especially, but I am sure he does not want to become a Tottenham Hotspur, who always did well in cups, but never really got close in the league until this year”, he said after the game on LFC TV.

“I'm sure he would like to be a better team with better players who will be fighting for Champions League or the Premier League – he wants to be up there fighting with the big boys.”

Liverpool will face Sevilla in the Europa League final at St. Jakob-Park in Basel on 18th May.
