Former Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani admits that not making his mark at Anfield will always remain a big regret in his career.

Currently at Sporting Lisbon, the midfielder joining Liverpool from Roma in the summer of 2009, but during his only season at Anfield, the Italian struggled to come to terms with the pace of the Premier League.




And his injuries also proved to be costly as he made just 28 appearances for the club before he was shipped back to Italy with Juventus on loan; he also played for AC Milan before he left the Reds for Fiorentina in 2012.

The midfielder admits that injuries played a big part in his failure in England and also feels the departure of Rafael Benitez also turned out to be the key as it was the Spaniard who took him to Anfield.
 


When asked whether there is any regret on his part at not being successful at Liverpool, the midfielder told Sky Italia: “Definitely yes.

“It was a complicated year, with many injuries and then Benitez and [Eduardo] Macia, who took me to Liverpool, were gone and it became even more difficult for me.

“There is disappointment with how it went, but that’s okay; I experienced a great culture and lived in a nice city.”

At 31, the Italian is one of the veterans in the Sporting Lisbon side and while not a regular, he is a key part of the first team squad at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
