Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their interest in Villarreal attacking midfielder Denis Suarez and had their head of recruitment watching him at Anfield last night.

The 22-year-old has been in decent form since joining Villarreal from Barcelona last summer, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 46 appearances in all competitions.

Suarez’s impressive displays in the present campaign have made Tottenham interested, with Spurs even sending their head of recruitment Paul Mitchell to Anfield to watch the Spaniard in action against Liverpool in a Europa League semi-final second leg clash, according to the Press Association.

The youngster previously spent time in England with Manchester City, for whom he managed to clock up just 85 minutes over two games in all competitions.

Suarez was snapped up by the Citizens from Celta Vigo’s B team in 2013, before Barcelona’s B team swooped in for him two seasons later.

Although Barcelona sold him to Villarreal on a four-year deal in August, the Catalans still have a buy-back option on the starlet.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will make good their interest in the midfielder by lodging an official bid.
