Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon thinks Everton fans should be careful about wanting boss Roberto Martinez to leave the club and compared his situation with that experienced on a number of occasions by ex-Toffees manager David Moyes.

Everton are limping over the finishing line following a poor season in the Premier League and were drubbed 3-0 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last night.

There have been calls for Martinez to be sacked by sections of the Everton support and it is unclear whether the Spaniard will manage to keep hold of his job.

Lennon thinks Everton should tread carefully however and sees no reason why Martinez cannot bring about the improvement the club's fans want to see.

The Northern Irishman said on BBC Radio 5 live last night: "They've been to two semi-finals and OK, the league form's not been great, but under Moyesy, and Moysey was there for eleven years, he had some great years, but he also had some years when they were in the bottom half.

"Sometimes you've got to be careful what you wish for", Lennon continued.

"I know there's got to be improvement with Everton, but there's no reason why Roberto can't bring that improvement."

Everton currently sit in 12th spot in the Premier League standings, having picked up 44 points from their 37 games so far.

The Toffees finish the campaign by hosting already relegated Norwich City at Goodison Park on Sunday and it remains to be seen what reception Martinez is afforded by the fans.
