Tottenham Hotspur head of player development John McDermott has dubbed Rangers "excellent" after they took on a young Spurs side at Hotspur Way on Wednesday.

Mark Warburton’s treble chasing side have already won the Scottish Championship title and the Scottish Challenge Cup this season and visited north London to continue their preparations for their Scottish Cup final on 21st of May against Hibernian.

The friendly encounter ended 4-3 in Rangers’ favour as the Spurs youngsters failed to complete what could have been a remarkable comeback after being 4-1 down in the 68th minute.

Dean Shiels and James Tavernier handed Rangers a two-goal advantage within 30 minutes, while Martyn Waghorn’s 55th minute strike tripled the lead for Warburton’s treble chasing side.

Spurs did pull one back through young Shayon Harrison but Rangers tripled their lead once more through a Nicky Clark goal. Cy Goddard grabbed a quick brace but it wasn’t enough for the Spurs youngsters to equalise.

McDermott praised the Rangers side for putting on an impressive showing.

“We say it regularly – the best and hardest tests are usually when we play against men’s sides and I thought today was just that", he told his club's site.

“Rangers were excellent.

"Their movement, their physicality and their approach to the game was first class and I was really proud of how our players hung onto their coattails to some extent in the first half.

“We showed an excellent mentality to compete and then in the second half I thought the game was fairly even.”
