Chelsea star Eden Hazard is delighted at the opportunity to captain Belgium in this summer’s European Championship and is looking forward to fulfilling his leadership role.

While he was not at his best for Chelsea during a dismal 2015/16 campaign for both the club and the player, Hazard still remains a big star for Belgium and an important part of their hopes of doing well in this summer’s extravaganza.

In the absence of Vincent Kompany, who is out injured, Belgium coach Marc Wilmots named Hazard as his captain when he recently announced his squad for the European Championship.

The winger is delighted to get the opportunity to lead his country in a big tournament and while he admits that he is not as vocal on the field as most captains, he is hoping to lead Belgium through his performances.

On skippering Belgium, Hazard told VooSport: “I am happy, because I always try to be a leader on the pitch.

“I am not much of a talker, but it’s clear whenever I am on the field, I try to take the lead, with or without the armband.

“It’s up to offensive players like me to make a difference, and I am looking to play this role sincerely.”

Hazard made his debut for Belgium in 2008 and has earned 59 international caps for his country.
