Jose Enrique says he feels he deserved more opportunities to play for Liverpool this season, but understands the club's policy is to develop younger players.

The left-back recently ended his contract at Anfield after being deemed surplus to requirements by Reds boss Jurgen Klopp; he is now looking for a new home for next season.

Enrique is leaving Anfield with no hard feelings, but does believe he deserved more opportunities to impress over the season and for that reason departs with disappointment in his heart.

"I finished well with Liverpool. The decision to terminate my contract was from both sides", he explained to Spanish daily Marca.

"We decided to part ways before the end of the season and the club even gave me the freedom to announce it", the former Newcastle United left-back continued.

"I am leaving grateful, but a little disappointed. I think in this last year I deserved more opportunities, but Liverpool's policy is now betting on young people.

"I would have wished for a better ending, but this is football."

Enrique will be watching on this evening as Liverpool take on Sevilla in the final of the Europa League in Basel.

If Klopp can guide the Reds to victory then it would also book a Champions League place for the club next season, boosting Liverpool's attractiveness to potential signings in the summer transfer window.

Alberto Moreno, a former Sevilla player, is expected to be deployed as Liverpool's left-back tonight.
