Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes feels Celtic appointing Brendan Rodgers as their new manager is a “huge statement”.

Ronny Deila, who guided the Hoops to their fifth consecutive Scottish Premiership title, parted ways with the club at the end of the season.

David Moyes, Roy Keane, Neil Lennon and Owen Coyle amongst others were in the running to replace the Norwegian at Celtic Park, but Rodgers ultimately got the nod.

The 43-year-old was handed a one-year rolling contract by Celtic last week, having been out of work since being sacked by Liverpool in October.

And McInnes, who thinks the appointment of Rodgers has managed to unite the Celtic fans, believes the profile of Scottish football will be lifted due to the presence of the Northern Irishman.

“The appointment of Brendan Rodgers is a huge statement from Celtic", McInnes was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

"To appoint a manager of such calibre shows there is really good ambition there.

“They had a list of very strong candidates to replace Ronny Deila and the appointment of Brendan appears to have united the Celtic supporters.

“This will only enhance the profile of Scottish football and give our game extra respect.”

Rodgers went desperately close to winning the Premier League with Liverpool in the 2013/14 campaign, but a late wobble meant the Reds had to be satisfied with second spot as Manchester City secured the title.
