Former Leeds United star Noel Whelan is of the opinion that it would be better if the club stick with Steve Evans as head coach rather than appointing Karl Robinson or John Sheridan.

Evans, who took charge of Leeds in October, is yet to be offered a new deal by owner Massimo Cellino despite helping the club to finish in 13th spot in the recently concluded campaign.

As a result, MK Dons boss Robinson and Oldham Athletic manager Sheridan have been linked with replacing the Scot at Leeds.

But Whelan thinks Evans is more suited to the Leeds job than Robinson and Sheridan, owing to the good work the 53-year-old has done at Elland Road.

“Karl Robinson and John Sheridan are two names that have been mentioned for the head coach’s job but is there any point in getting them in? Probably not”, he wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“The two of them have got experience in managerial positions but Steve has got a track record and has done well enough at the club.”

Leeds are also looking at the possibility of appointing a foreign manager, with Fabio Cannavaro and Ivan Juric amongst others being in the fray.

And Whelan feels the club should re-appoint Evans if they fail to bring in a head coach from abroad soon.

“We hear rumours of looking at other managers from abroad but if that is the case then we need to make something happen quick”, he added.

“If not, leave it with Steve, let him crack on, he knows what he needs and, for me, he’s done enough to keep the job anyway.”
