Former Rangers defender Hugh Burns feels that Michael O'Halloran is not suited to the role Gers manager Mark Warburton is asking him to do.

Warburton swooped to take O'Halloran to Ibrox from Premiership side St Johnstone in the winter transfer window, having been impressed with the former Celtic youth player.

The 25-year-old has not yet made his mark with the Gers though and Burns feels that O'Halloran is not suited to the way Warburton wants him to play, having slotted him in for Martyn Waghorn, when the striker was injured.

"If I have one criticism of the shape of our team, we're playing with Kenny Miller up through the middle, Waghorn is right and [Barrie] McKay is left. Now Waghorn is out, so we bring in O'Halloran", he explained on Rangers TV, assessing the season.

"Now we sign a player from St Johnstone who feeds off the big boy [Steven] MacLean up top, buzzes about through the middle and gets dribs and drabs and scraps", Burns continued.

"And he is the only guy I think we are asking to do something he's not capable of doing. Maybe capable is a wee bit hairy.

"It takes time to adjust, but you get there quicker playing in a position you're more comfortable with.

"It's a big enough move for the kid coming here, but if you're feeding off scraps and hit the target and then your next job is to go and play wide right and be technically better than the left-back and beat him…I don't think Michael O'Halloran has got that Barrie McKay, dip your shoulder and go by his man.

"I think they are asking him to do something that he's not capable at this moment in time of doing", he added.

O'Halloran was not able to play for Rangers in cup competitions when he arrived due to being cup-tied, meaning he could only feature in the Scottish Championship.

The winger will be hoping to cement a regular spot in the Rangers team over pre-season as the Gers head into a Scottish Premiership campaign in 2016/17.
