Manchester United have parted company with Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman took over at Old Trafford after the 2014 World Cup, where he led the Netherlands, and put pen to paper on a three-year deal, succeeding David Moyes in the dugout.

Van Gaal led the Red Devils back into the Champions League in his first season in charge, though in the recently concluded campaign they could finish just fifth in the Premier League.

However, Manchester United did win the FA Cup on Saturday.

Straight after winning the trophy though reports surfaced claiming that Van Gaal was to be sacked this week and replaced by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

And now Van Gaal's time at Manchester United is over, with the club thanking him for leading them to the FA Cup and praising his "excellent" work over his two years in charge.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said in a statement: "I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries).

"He has behaved with great professionalism and dignity throughout his time here. He leaves us with a legacy of having given several young players the confidence to show their ability on the highest stage.

"Everyone at the club wishes him all the best in the future."
