Ex-Leeds United star Noel Whelan has revealed that he felt disappointed after the club released Scott Wootton and Lewis Walters last week.

Wootton, who joined Leeds from Manchester United in 2013, made 26 appearances in all competitions in the 2015/16 campaign, while in total he turned out 74 times for the Whites, scoring once and providing an assist.

The defender struggled to make a significant impact at Leeds and was often played out of position as a right-back despite being a centre-back.

And Whelan, who admitted that Wootton’s spell at Leeds was not successful, however, explained that he felt sorry for the 24-year-old as the Manchester United youth product often did not get the chance to play in his favoured position at Elland Road.

“Wootton’s career at Leeds has not been successful but I do feel a little bit sorry for him because he has not been playing in his original position and certain things have gone against him at crucial times”, he wrote in his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Whelan went on to add that he was surprised with Leeds’ decision to release Walters, who he thinks did not receive enough time to showcase his talents at the club.

“But I’m a little bit surprised that Lewis Walters has not been given another contract”, he continued.

“I thought he was somebody that could be a serious contender to start so that’s something I am a little bit disappointed about.

“I don’t think he has been given enough time and he definitely has the attributes there to be a great player.

"It’s obviously not to be, so we’ll just have to take that one on the chin.”
