St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright insists he was not surprised to see Brendan Rodgers taking charge of Celtic.

The former Liverpool manager, who replaced Ronny Deila at Celtic Park, has been handed a one-year rolling contract by the Scottish champions.

It was claimed in some corners that taking charge of Celtic would be a step down for Rodgers, who is an established Premier League manager.

But Wright explains he was not taken aback by Rodgers’ decision to agree to the Celtic job, owing to the massive stature of the club.

The 52-year-old, who thinks the Scottish Premiership will benefit from having a manager of Rodgers’ pedigree, believes the Northern Irishman will have a considerable amount to spend on new signings in the summer.

“It’s good for the league that a manager of Brendan’s quality is coming up”, he was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

“Celtic have taken their time and appointed a very good manager.

“It certainly doesn’t surprise me that a manager of Brendan’s calibre would want the job. Celtic are a massive club.

“This is a club he has ties to in terms of being a supporter but ultimately it is a great challenge for him.

“I’m sure he will have had assurances of a budget for players and I think we will see most clubs strengthen this summer.”

Celtic, who won the Scottish Premiership title for the fifth straight season, however, flattered to deceive in cup competitions on both domestic and European fronts in the 2015/16 campaign.
