Former Rangers defender Alan McLaren feels that Morton were the best side defensively against the Gers in the Scottish Championship.

Mark Warburton's men eased to the Championship title this season, booking a spot in the Premiership for next term where they will renew their battle with foes Celtic.

Rangers scored freely in the Championship, netting 88 times in their 36 league games, as they regularly tore opposing defences apart.

A number of teams attempted to shut up shop against the Gers to limit the damage and McLaren feels that Morton, who finished in fifth spot, were the most successful in doing it.

"I think Morton were probably the best side we played against defensively because they just sat 4-5-1", he said on Rangers TV, assessing the season.

"They were dropping maybe 25 yards from their goalline, so there was no space."

Rangers will hope to have more space to play in the top flight next term.

The Gers have already started to reinforce their squad for the challenge ahead, adding midfielders Jordan Rossiter and Joey Barton to the ranks at Ibrox.
